Our Youth Minister Better Be…..? (Quick Poll)

I have always been intrigued in what students, parents, pastors and the general congregation expect when it comes to church leaders. So let us do a little polling, shall we?
* Assumption: The youth minister already has a strong faith and they get how to “do” youth ministry. So if they could only have ONE other super power, what would it be?  (Discussion to Follow)

  1. Nate, I understand what you are getting at but it is really hard for me to vote because context matters so much. But I would vote program and structure for middle school, relationship for high school. If I could narrow it down, I would go structure/program + parent/leader relationships for middle school, and communication + relationships + leadership of volunteers for high school.

  2. Andy,
I am trying to see if there is a difference in what we value for MS vs. HS. I also want to know what we would add an extra scoop of if we could choose.

  3. I know a big part of what I try and do in middle school is connect kids to each and leaders since this usually doesn’t happen in children’s ministry. We’re trying to get them out of the rhythm of come on Sunday morning, do some singing, listen to the leader, then go home. So I don’t know if that falls under relationship guru, or simply connection maker?

    • Adam,
You know the old saying “polls aren’t really helpful and they’ve caused more harm than good on this discussion!!!” Someone on the polls actually put that a MS minister should be about “helping volunteer leaders do all of the above.” I actually agree with that and I think that is what you are saying as well.
I’m actually going to follow up this post with some reactions that might explain this in a better way…so stay tuned!
